This novel reminds me of the book of Job. Job always questioned God why must bad things happen to good people? Job lost everything as did Mr. Burpo who is a great man. He does volenteer work as a fireman, coach, and pastor of God.
I think the meaning of this book is to trust God even when bad things are happening to you and he will help you get through it. I also agree with Mark that this book questions the belief that if a bad thing happens to a person he must have sinned because Mr. Burpo is like Job a good man who had a number of bad things happen to him.
